Frosty the Snowfflé

Xmas = Warmth of the full tummy and big hugs :)

Its the time of the year when the air seems happier and my home kitchen seems lovelier...

So here goes, the merry recipe of xmas 2014, i present you:

Frosty the Snowfflé
Yield: 5 ramekins
Bake time: 20 mins at 190 C

Equipment
Hand mixer
Clean rubber / silicone spatula
Soufflé dish or ramekins (any oven safe dish with sides that go straight up to allow the soufflé to rise properly)

Ingredients
6 egg whites, room temperature
3 egg yolks, room temperature
1/4 tsp all spice powder
1 tbsp cinnamon powder
35 gr cocoa powder
2 tbsp butter + 1 tbsp sugar, for prepping ramekins
90 gr caster sugar (for soufflé base) + 24 gr caster sugar (for meringue)
60 ml fresh milk
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp + 2 1/2 tsp all purpose flour
icing sugar to decorate

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 190 C for 10 mins. Grease the soufflé dish / ramekins with softened butter and sprinkle with sugar. Rotate the dish to allow the sugar to adhere to all buttered surfaces. Catch excess sugar with other dishes, place the dishes in the fridge until you’re ready to fill them.

2. Prepare the soufflé base: Heat milk in the microwave for 30 seconds, remove and repeat once. Add 90 gr caster sugar, cinnamon powder, all spice powder, flour and cocoa powder. Fold until fully combined. Lastly, pour egg yolks and mix well.

3. Make the meringue. Ensure that you have a clean, dry mixing bowl to begin with.
Whip the egg whites, salt and cream of tartar using a hand mixer on a medium-high until
it forms soft peaks. Tips: soft peaks form when the whites are just starting to hold. They’re
a little stiffer, but when you gently turn your whisk upside down they will still flop back into themselves after a second.
4. Add the sugar in 3 stages, beating for a few seconds after each addition.
Continue beating until whites are shinier and about to form stiff peaks. Be careful
not to over beat your whites as they can become rigid and fail to rise in the oven.
Pour the soufflé base mixture (no. 2) into the meringue half at a time. Fold gently
using rubber spatula until fully combined.

5. Spoon the batter into the prepared soufflé dish / ramekins until it reaches the top. Use the back of a knife / spatula to smoothen the top surface. Wipe any excess batter
along the outer edge using a paper towel.
6. Transfer the ramekins to a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes.
Tips: Baking for 20 minutes will result in a fully-set soufflé with a springy texture. If you
prefer a more runny center with custardy texture, reduce the baking time to 15 minutes.

After removing from oven, using a small sieve, decorate with icing sugar and your
favourite stencil and serve immediately. Alternatively, serve with whipped cream, creme anglaise or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Note: it is common for finished soufflés to
deflate/crack if not served right away.

Now we are ready to impress the kids and our loved ones :)
Any special holiday treats from you?

Have a MERRIEST XMAS & HAPPIEST NEW YEAR peeps!

Nadia is ONE!

*patting my own back while sipping some coffee...*

Time surely flies damn fast! Possibly because of having 2 active young-lings inside a tiny space makes every muscle i have to work harder, every cells of my brain to think faster, and the seconds to move faster and unnoticeable.

Such an awesome feeling to look back to the day she was born! Unlike Nayaka's birth date, which happening too fast and vaguely remembered, Nadia's arrival in our life is crystal clear.

One of the reason is because she was born on 17 August. For Indonesian, this day is always marked with big red pen and celebrated at every streets, houses, land, sea, sky!

Here's the specific story on that day...

I was at my bed with Nayaka, reading him a book and singing some songs (our rituals before he closes his eyes) and when his and my eyes was drifting up and down... sudden painful kick happened around my pelvic and followed by urge to pee! *suspense*

i went to my toilet and let out the pinkish liquid. My water broke.
yep, i knew this from the first pregnancy.

So, i calmly woke my husband. and for the second time he woke up with this blur mixed with panic look. "huhh? wha? now?? your water broke!?!"

his reaction awakes Nayaka and the whole house.

I looked at the time. 10-ish pm. 16 Aug. oookayy... personally i try to aim for the 17. and i think my husband somehow quietly has the same vibe, since we slowly take our things... slowly walk down and search for cab instead of calling... slowly walk to the ward... slowly filling in some form... by the time im in the operating theatre, my eyes are fixed to the clock in front of my eyes (also, everything else in front of my tummy is covered by big blue cloth)

The hardest thing to endure from that 2 over hour waiting was the contraction! gosh.. swear to god, how relieve i am to see the epidural doctor arriving and setting her tools and needles.

and... 00.13 am ~ i hear her cry ;)

The "glorious-yet-not-so-glamorous" face we both have!

Moving fast forward 12 months later, she became the little lady of the house.
With her willpower bigger than her body.

here's her achievement so far:
  1. She has 3 teeth. 2 upper and 1 lower.
  2. She doesnt like to crawl. she forces to grab on people's index finger so she can walk around or run after her brother.
  3. She speaks a lot. yet no one understands but herself. *i guess its pretty frustating*
  4. She loves food. anytime of the day. especially grown up savory food.
  5. She can clap. with happy face!
  6. She can clench her fist when we say "gemesss" to her. (i have no english word for this term gemes)
  7. She can wave goodbye. but no kiss bye.
  8. She started to shake her head when she doesnt want things.

  9. She does peek-a-boo like a pro
  10. She could open adult books with thin papers, page by page.
  11. She loves playing drum. she has this amazing hand holding skill by her fingers, not her palm.
  12. She wants everything her brother holding onto. and throw it once given. (basically she just like to test the water)
  13. She likes to tear tissues.
  14. She cries when she needs to poop. and she gives a "dont stare at me" frown look when she's about to do it.
  15. She has a smelly pillow that she loves to bite, chew, kiss, and poke the corners (including the tag) with her fingers.
  16. She screams like there's an ambulance coming straight next to your ear.
  17. When we say birdie, she will look out to the window, and when she saw one, she will stretch out her hands, open and close it repeatedly as if to invite them.
  18. She really really loves bright lights.
  19. She will knock her head unto us when we asked her to kiss us.
  20. She can point to something when she want to express her feeling or need something.
  21. She likes to stare deeply at people and her smile is more expensive than buying HDB in Singapore.
  22. She still breastfeed at night (okay, this one is my achievement!)
  23. She's able to click on my iphone main button.
  24. She doesnt like it when her hand stuck inside the shirt's arm hole area. she will get panic and get jumpy and screaming.
  25. She likes to see herself in the mirror and play peek-a-boo with her own reflection.
.... and many more to come! :)

of course, this list of things about her is not for the purpose of bragging on her. As im sure all of our babies has their unique milestones (i would need to do another round for Nayaka) but rather its a self note as a parents and perhaps for her when she be a parent too one day :)

For now, am just glad and happy to see the development of my full-of-characteristic little lady.

Nadia Hajadi and her rainbow moments.

Bubbly Time!

*sponsored products by Alphanova Bebe

Bath time has been a tough time for me... from chasing Nayaka to bribing him with toys and endless promises to go to fantasy land after a bath just doesn't work anymore. I think kids are a God's way to test the limit of our brain and heart capacity. Which i failed at most of the time.

Just when I was about to raise my white flag, the kind people from Kidzloft contacted and provided me with Alphanova bébé 3-in-1 Bubble Wash. Made by Alphanova Sante which specialises in organic & eco-friendly French skincare, Alphanova bébé 3-in-1 Bubble Wash contains natural and organic ingredients sourced from Provence - France, where the product is also made in!

Am a bit skeptical about it, as for all of my youth days, i have hardly tried bubble bath. I am not convinced of the benefit nor the need for the bubbles, which in the end it troubles me to clean my body once more. yep i need a good scrub in a cold water type.

So, here goes..

Dropped about one teaspoon of Alphanova bébé 3-in-1 Bubble Wash and its quite amazing heaps of bubble it can produce!

Mountains of bubbles!

Nayaka was amazed too and he immediately said, i want to bath now, mama!

After we cleaned his body, he was then allowed to go into the tub. Oh boy he definitely couldn’t wait for it… he keep wanting to touch the bubbles and even spread it all over his body, face and hair. Which totally amazed me as shampooing is an even harder task to do.

Super excited and he asked, i can eat these?
bubbles, bubbles, bubbles, even my Combi get a good wash!
I am really stunned on how easy and manageable this bath time with Nayaka, he is very happy too splashing and cleaning his cars inside the tub.

I did not check how long he stayed in the tub, but his hands were wrinkly. One indication that he had an ultra good time :) And to my surprise, we still have a good amount of bubbles in the tub!

Really wish i knew about this method earlier!
Because of that, mom can move on and do more important stuff in her life
(like writing this blog, yea!)

Beside the nice natural smell that lingers in my bathroom and my boy's hair, here are more facts on the bubble soap wash:
  1. Key ingredients like Honey and Camomile provides a calming effect and very soothing after bath feel.
  2. All in one wash shampoo, body soap, and bubble bath! hmm.. i somehow hope it can clean teeth too. hee...
  3. Besides cleansing the skin from the visible dirt, i can feel a good smooth clean skin after one rinse. (I'm definitely not a fan of those soap that gives the slippery feel even after a couple of rinse.)
  4. The texture of the liquid once applied on the hair is great, as no teary eyes. Im sure this is as important for all baby shampoo. Nayaka hates it everytime a bucket full of water is being pour on top of his soapy head, more of because he could taste the soap. However, this time it doesnt bother him at all... perhaps he is still amazed with the gazillion bubbles in front of him. :D
  5. Oh and did i mention is certified organic?

As a green mom that fully supports organic products that benefits both human health and the mother earth, i am now converted for bubble wash method, and im sure Nayaka agrees too!

With fun bath times like these, we surely can’t wait for the next bath time!

Breastfeeding... part 2

Behind the Myth.

As i am in the joy of knowing there are 6 happy couples around me who are pregnant (in almost the same timing too! yayy for baby bloom!), i feel the urge to write some knowledge based on my personal experience on my early days on breastfeeding. You know, to justify my midnight googling and endless parental seminar and tons of borrowed books about it.

Here's a list of myths about breastfeeding that need to be busted (pun intended, momma.) and how i swallow my chill pill and surviving it till this date :)

Myth #1: Breastfeeding is easy.

NOT TRUE!
Breastfeeding is the hardest encounter from my 9 month pregnancy till my son is 1 year old. It does get easier for my second kid, but does not mean i get to skip the bleeding breast, the engorged and sore breast, and the high fever and fatigue part.

How to make it better? Firstly, get a good start by learning it beforehand. Get experienced help and engage Lactation Consultant, especially while we still in the hospital after the delivery, it is the best time to learn by doing together with your baby. Make a daily appointment and be kiasu about it, ask many many many questions.

Secondly, for the hard pain of trial and error during the beginning (probably 2-4 weeks to get the mom and baby set a good routine) is unavoidable. These are the main reason for many mommies to quit early, but trust me, don't. Think and appreciate it as a special bonding moment just for the two of you (it doesn't last forever). And remember, the baby is as blank as you are.

Myth #2: I have small breasts, I cannot breastfeed.
NOT TRUE!
Well, lets not define a woman by the cup size she wears. Let me enlighten you with the truth: Breast size does not equal breast capacity. Breast Milk comes from Glandular tissue, not fat tissue. The fact that many mommies failed were purely psychological and other time it is because of improper latching technique. The improper latch leads to decreasing milk supply, and within 2 months, it will be auto switch off.

How to make it better?
Firstly, believe in yourself that your body can produce enough milk. Secondly, If the problem lies on the latching, try power pumping it. (check my previous set routine)

Tips: Prolactin levels (the hormone responsible for milk production) are highest at night, so those night latching (or pumping sessions) are important for milk production.

Myth #3: Breastfeeding will cause my breasts to sag.
Hmm.... Somewhat not true.
My obgyn told me that breast sagging is due hormonal change during pregnancy stage, not breastfeeding. What happen is our breast ligaments stretches almost double the size (i went from size 34 to 38, sometimes 40!) As we dont have muscle inside our breast, we cant simply tighten it back to its original perky form.

How to make it better?
He also mentioned that we can try to do lots of swimming or arm exercises to try to slightly tighten it back. But, as much as we want to be the hottest mommy right after giving birth, we need to learn to love our new body and appreciate each scars and mark, a reminder of much love we are capable to give for our little angels... Anyway, if image is really important to you, the right kind of bra (and the right kind of husband) will give the confidence back at you in no time :)

Myth #4: Breastfeeding helps you lose weight.
TRUE!... i think.
Our bodies burn almost 20 calories to make just an ounce of breast milk. Yay!! The bad part is, those hunger will also creeping in your mind and tummy too. I keep on snacking and digging through my fridge to find edible things almost every 2 hours. While diet is not allowed on breastfeeding, overeating might lead to add weight.

How to make it better?
So what is the best calorie intake? Extra 300-500 calories per day in addition to our daily intake before pregnancy. I always believe in exercise can do so much more than just a diet. But of course, the term exercise now is changed to bottle washing, carrying your baby to sleep, and cleaning up the toys.

What about fluid intake? yes please. My personal experience on drinking water after i pump or nurse makes a huge difference. It really gets filled up within 2-3 hours.

What about milk? If you really like milk, go ahead and drink it! However, try to take fresh milk instead of pregnancy milk, as a nurse told me that it is all filled with fat content. It is meant for mommy who had problems on their diet, these sort of milk is good to replenish what is lost. A normal healthy diet of vegetables, fruits, grains and proteins is all we need. And for the last thing, mommy, we do not need to drink milk to make milk.

Myth #5: Breastfeeding mom won’t know if her baby had enough milk.
NOT TRUE!
This thought always worries me every time i do a direct latch, i would rather pump it out and see how much milk my baby can drink and how long can it last till she gets hungry again. If you happen to be curious mom like me, do try pumping it out sometimes. But if you are set for 100% direct latch, then there is a trick to find out: Check your baby's diaper. If its wet and heavy, then you dont have anything to worry about. Do note that your baby need to nurse anytime he or she wants for at least 2month before two of you develop on a fix routine.

Myth #6: Breastfeeding ties the mom down.
NOT TRUE!
After my experience with Nayaka, which i failed to do direct latch, the time consumed for bottle washing, pumping, sterilizing were actually a lot more hassle and time consuming. When we need to get some fresh air to the nearest mall, it feels like i need to carry the whole kitchen and baby room with me. With Nadia doing direct latch, it is soooo much simpler! We just need to bring a nursing cover. And, if its not for the sake of going back to work, i want to eliminate the pumping sessions altogether ;D

How to make it better?
Practice makes perfect! *fist up high*

Myth #7: No milk (or not enough) during the first 3 days after birth.
NOT TRUE!
Firstly, newborn babies delivered fresh from the oven has a capability to survive 72 hours (that is 3 days) without food. So do not get panic if you have little or less milk coming out these first few days.

Secondly, based from this chart, we know that there are different stages of breast milk. The first stage is called Colostrum. Colostrum production are in small amount but they are thick and filled with the best antibodies, perfect for our newborn's tiny tummy. A way to determine the size of our baby's stomach is by their fist.

Important thing to remember, Breast Milk is easily and quickly digested, so your newborn might get hungry again after 2 hours. Personally i would nurse as and when Nadia needs, there was a point where i am not sure that she might just need it for comfort instead of hunger, yet after 2 weeks we managed to get our routine right.

Myth #8: There is no such thing as nipple confusion
NOT TRUE!
My pediatrician told me that babies takes a different skills to master latching on from our nipple and latching on from artificial nipple (bottle teats). So when your baby gets a slow milk flow from the breast and then gets rapid flow from a bottle, he or she will figure out quickly what they prefer to. That explain Nadia's gagging when we first time introduce her to the milk bottle when she's about 1 months old. But soon after 2 days, she has mastered it. And now she even loves to drink water straight from my tumbler. It is fascinating how our little ones adapt to our lifestyle :) While many breastfeeding fanatics suggest no bottle feeding for the next 4 month, i was yearning for my (at least) 5 hour straight sleep.

Same goes to the exclusive latching. Sometimes the baby will need you just for comforter, cuddler, pacifier, whatever you name it. After 4 months of exclusive breastfeeding, the baby will most likely turn down the bottle too.

How to make it better?
Personally i wouldn't want 100 percent of neither side (also my maternity leave only covers for 3 months). Sooner or later we need to introduce the bottle slowly, so we gave her once or twice per day using the bottle and increase to only day time. While night time is good to direct latch, mainly because less hassle to wake up and prepare the milk (more sleeping time!); as well as the Prolactin level is high at night time (which hopefully means longer Breast Milk supply!)

Myth #9: There is no value in giving Breast Milk after 12 months because the quality of breast milk begins to decline after six months.
NOT TRUE!
The composition of human milk changes to meet the changing needs of baby as he or she matures. That is why i promise myself to take less of junk food (altho sometimes i am guilty of yummy indomie for supper) and take better quality food intake. Sometimes when Nadia had constipation, i try to eat banana and papaya more often too. That is the beauty of Breast Milk and that special relationship between mom and her babies. :)

What about formula milk? Truth is, the advertising company has been hardworkingly doing its part to promote the goodness of each brand and being competitive to one another. But as compared to Breastmilk, which has over 300 ingredients including white cells, antibacterial and antiviral agents etc. Formula milk has only 40 (non-living) ingredients.

Myth #10: You Shouldn't Nurse if You're Sick

IT DEPENDS.Unless your breast has some infection that the doctor asked to throw away all the pumped milk (i had major hard time doing it when i had mastitis) Continuing to breastfeed while you have a cold or the flu actually helps protect your baby from that same illness. The antibodies will be passed down to your baby everytime she nurse. Another reason why Breast Milk is considered as a powerful fluid for your baby.

Bonus Myth: If You Don't Nurse, You're a Bad Mom.
YOU DECIDE.
I have my ups and downs during breastfeeding my 2 little angels. From Nayaka, being a new mom, i hate that desperate-panic-expression he made when he couldnt latch on properly. It made me panic too. My milk supply was low and almost negative. We decided to get Formula milk. which 2 days later after we bought, my milk supply miraculously comes out and i even had oversupply by the 3rd months. However, due to pumping only without a direct latch, my breastmilk only last till Nayaka is 8 months old.

With Nadia, i have made a promise to do it better from the start, learning it intensively at the hospital and never give in to Nadia's cry. Till today (Nadia is 10mth and 6days old) i am still breastfeeding her.
I had my oversupply again, but this time around is not as bad. We started to introduce Nadia to the Formula milk too, once a day or every 2-3 days. So that she can have a taste.

So mommies, if after all is done and for some reason you have decided not to breastfed, it doesnt make you a failed mom. Provide your baby with formula milk that you believe and feel good about, and move on. dont get stressed all over it. Your baby will be healthy and happy with your love and care :)

Thaaaat is my long list *phew* i hope it is useful for you mommies (and future mommies to prepare!)
Now, did i miss anything? any mommies out there wants to add on?

what makes a colorful day?

#lolliboxturns2

Last saturday, we were invited to birthday celebration of Lollibox, the leading arts and crafts for kids. It has similar concept of iNbox, but with more free flow of contents. Hmm.. who doesn't like some variation on life anyways? :)

They host the party in one of our fave spot, its called The Treehouse at Grandstand, where a part of the restaurant area are dedicated for kids for free play.

The theme of the party was to dress in green and we decided to dress in uniform (custom made by cute and talented designer near our house in Jakarta)

love the minimalist yet fun deco!

We had so much fun doing the crafts, especially for Nayaka. I asked him to do a door sign for his room and we decided to do letter N with red car in it! I know art can be a free flow sometimes, but it is good to give a rough guide and sense of direction in the overall big picture, then let the kid fill in the gap with their own imagination and creativity.

Car themed activity sheets, what not to like?

Art is a serious business, we learn that from his popo.
The happy and proud crowd.

Nayaka hardly had any interest in trying new food but when he saw the array of pretty looking cupcakes, he eagerly wants a bite! he cant finish it, but hey, it was a good motivation to begin with. (and you wonder why is it so hard for mommy to stay slim...)

Better take a snapshot of these fun looking cupcakes, before the kids jumps unto them!
Mom, dont snap me while im eating...

Getting some exposure with other kids has great benefits too, as Nayaka learn how to share and wait for his turn, get inspired to try new materials, get his hands dirty and splatter some glue, paint, colors!

We ended the party with singing a birthday song and cake cutting. The kind and generous people at Lollibox even gave him a bag full of crafty things to do at home. We cant wait to try it!

happy birthday Lollibox!
Thanks for inviting us!

He said this to me, "I had fun today, mama!" and that being said from a three years old, really sums up what a good day is :)

Nayaka's creation on the right side.

Hope your weekend pass by as fun as ours did!

Cheers,
Erlina.

Mind your apps.

gadget limitation for toddlers.

Setting good examples might be easy to said than done.
We might say to our toddler they cant watch too much tv, while we munch our dinner with our eyes glued on our smartphones.

Living in Singapore where technology are part of our primary needs, it is hard to eliminate the habit of not opening email every hour, or checking up on someone's status on FB, or reading online articles, or watching *ahem* stalking what Benedict Cumberbatch is doing.

Nayaka fave time when he was 1 years old is unlocking our iPad and iPhones and tried to click on the bright colored icons.

Father and son bonding time could sometimes goes like this.
Magical moments has gone digital

Previously, as a new parents, i have made a promise that i wont be 'that kind' of parent who let their kid play with ipad so they would behave nicely and neatly. Trust me, it requires gulping your food in less than 5 minutes and at least 5 books to keep them occupied and happy. So mommies, dont ever feel guilty with all the stare from across the table!  :p

Reading the news on some toddlers addicted to these gadgets and the other side effect,
i do feel there are needs to set boundaries.

30 cm away from screen is the first rule.

Lets list down what are the good things technology has bring:
  1. Nayaka's skill of understanding a concept is very fast.
i believe he is used to basic instructions from various apps. and this applies on real world too. everytime we ask him not to do certain things, like playing with scissors or go near the kitchen, it is fast for him to understand a consequence for dangerous activities. Differentiation between what is right and what is not.
  2. His ability to extract and recall. He could linked some vocabularies like verb or names to something similar (like the other time we mentioned Gill from Nemo's, and he says its the same name as his teacher Ms. Jill)
  3. It improve Nayaka's vocabulary and math skills, especially in our house where english is barely spoken and mandarin is even less. There's one day when Nayaka sang me a Russian version of Wheel on The Bus.

And here comes the bad stuff:
  1. Nayaka's habit of watching ipad is when he eat, he needs to watch ipad.
It reduces his interest in learning to self feed.
  2. Sometimes when using youtube app, he can go too far with many videos, which can lead to those bad contents like violence or sexual or even bad words.
  3. Some parents says it lessen the kid's social skill, because ipad is a one way communication and lack of human interaction. but i have to disagree on this, simply because Nayaka learn to share the screen with his neighbor kid too, even let him play the best part.

Here are the top 5 current apps that Nayaka loves:
  1. all of lego app (free app) it gives the additional pieces by playing it. It has clever and interesting stories too!
    Build your own vehicle

He build the model based on the apps. not perfect, but structurally very imaginative!

  2. Nemo's reef app. (free app with optional in-app purchase) being a diver and absolute nature lover, i am the one who is responsible for introducing this app to Nayaka. Just the other day his nanny brought home 3 small fish from the wet market, and proudly says she bought it because it only cost 1 dollar each, and Nayaka can play with it. I was quite upset with this idea of buying without my permission and 'playing' with living animal without sense of responsibility. I ask her to return the fishes, however i do think having pet are good idea to implement. So, comes this app! We learn interesting fish facts and we need to design our reef so the new fishes are attracted to come :) ~woops, mom is addicted to this!

Can you spot Bloat the Puffer Fish?

  3. Candy Count (free app with in-app purchase). i love that this apps teaches about color matching + math skills at the same time. Thanks for mommy Lia for the info!
    Match the colors
    Math Skills

  4. Rainbow Cars. (free app) Stumble upon by accidental search of cars, but Nayaka keep coming back to this app than the rest, because there are quite a few activities to do like learning about colors, drawing and story telling.

  5. all time fave: youtube. (free app) i have subscribe to some of his fave channels like Disney Collections, Sesame Street, Paw Patrol to streamline his watchlist. But seems like the side bar still leads to some inappropriate content sometimes. anyone know how to set the limitation?

All in all, personally i feel is good to have a balance between gadget time and real-world activities that your kid can still enjoy to touch or explore or smell and feel, like Lego or crafty projects (check my inbox review) or even baking cakes.

My guilty confession is, sometimes i use the iPad to calm Nayaka down because his sister need to go to sleep early, while he really likes to jump around and make loud noises around the house. I will tell him beforehand that as soon as Nadia asleep, we will turn off that iPad, and read a book or two, drink his milk, say his prayer and go to sleep. Seems like a good night routine for him and the rest of us. :)

It is important that these gadgets' objective is to add your parental time and bonding moment, and not taking it away. After all, the technology supposed to help you, not consumes you.

On a personal note, as a parent, there's a need to keep up with technology. I couldnt imagine what kind of technology will be when our kid has grown up (with all the hastags and abbreviation that i could hardly understand nowadays?!)

Any thoughts? or any mommies wanna share a personal favorite iPad app for their toddler?

Cheers,
Erlina.

Nayaka is 3!

*mom is in panic mode*

1 year old and all smiley!
2 years old and never fail to bring happiness to our home.
3 years old and no day is complete without his loud noise and laughter!

Nayaka just had his big celebration couple of weeks ago. As a proud mom and dad and grandmoms and granddads, we all want a big stuff for him. But in Singapore, not many places are catered to do so. Here's some findings that i could share...

Who to invite.
How much friends dyou have when you are 3? This is the toughest to list, as Nayaka was new in our neighborhood Montessori, his pals were very limited. In the end, We list down our dear friends that has children with similar age, it is also great way for Nayaka to learn to be social and make future playdates. I love how children has the most un-judging way to make a friend, start from the minute they met :)

Venue.
I do think home is still very suitable for birthday parties aged 1-5 years old. However, living in 108sqm HDB that is filled with stuffed toys and legos in every corner is not the best choice for the party venue. Not to consider his little sister Nadia which needs her beauty sleep every 2-3 hours.

Many site suggested indoor playground too, but i feel that the number of kid guest were all almost his age, which is not yet suitable let alone could enjoy fully these facilities. We are quite lucky to find a spot in nearby McD that has mini playground and outdoor turtle pond.

We pray hard there's no rain that day, and God gave us a bonus of sunny hot weather!

Theme.
Well it really depends on your kid's personality. There are a million themes out there, and i have use up the car theme last year, and i should say i am deeply thankful for McD's theme (it kinda fit the grown ups too!) plus they have these goodie bags and even games with mini prizes for the kids. All we need to do is show up and be merry! (we decided to get our own cake, because we think Nayaka might not like the Ronald McDonald cake)

Food.
My mom loves to cook. and she loves it when people eat her food. However, she told me that preparing it is quite tedious and to clean up were double the effort. She prepared Tumpeng for Nayaka's 2nd bday (It is a cone-shaped yellow rice dish like mountain with its side dishes. Indonesian loves to have it in ceremonies) and she prepare it from 5am in the morning. So i told her to relax and just do her hair for this 3rd bday party, as all the food is of course being served by McD. happy meal? happy tummy? happy minds.

Extra special Tumpeng!

Gifting Ideas.
Couple of our dear friends ask, what do Nayaka want for bday present? I think putting a gift registry is a great idea. I knew in Asia people are not open to this, we are so paiseh to let people know what we need. Well, don't take it as a wish list, but more of knowing what the bday kid can appreciate and reducing the unnecessary unwanted presents or duplication.

Andd.... how did the party goes?
some mishap here and there, such as the food is not served right on time, but i guess managing 70 hungry people that comes every 5 minutes is a tough job to do. And, the games set for 3 years old and below is also another tough job to do, as their attention span arent that long.

The centre of our joy!

I love his whole-hearted attitude, even on the smallest thing!
With popo and oma, his fave person in the world!

But all in all, Nayaka keep smiling and laughing and saying thank you to everyone who came, which we find very cute and admirable. He is a good host indeed. ...and for that, he deserve to be the King of the day!

The happy king and his castle!
